You know the type. She is someone who does everything well. She is successful in her career and marriage. As a mother, she does all the right things. She even dresses stylishly while sporting the latest haircut.

Many of us have this type of friend in our lives. I certainly do. Along with everything else, my friend makes an incredible apple pie. To try and keep up with her, I can get help from Piedmont Adult School this fall with courses like “Pie Basics”. According to the course description, I could learn to bake galettes, pies and tarts with flaky, tender crusts. (Hopefully, I could first learn what a galette is.)

But, if I really want to keep up with her, I also need to learn to make impressive hors d’oeuvres like she does for her seemingly effortless dinner parties. I can imagine treating guests to shrimp dumplings and sesame seed balls that I learned to make in “Dim Sum & Asian Snacks” at the Adult School. Or, maybe I could serve my own hamachi and unagi sushi as taught in the “Nigiri and Sushi” cooking class. Even better, I can outdo everyone at the holidays by taking “Holiday Hors D’oeuvres”.

My friend says any hors d’oeuvre tastes better with the right ingredients, such as fresh herbs from the garden. She should know, because she is also an accomplished gardener. For those who are less accomplished, the Adult School is offering “Gardening from the Ground Up” which, by the sounds of it, is just where I need to start.

Truth be told, I could use instruction in a few other areas if I want to be more like my friend. Perhaps I should consider “A Balancing Act: Managing Multiple Life Roles” offered at the Adult School. Then, I might be able to juggle things as gracefully as she does. Along the same lines, I can try “Organize Your Life”. Or, I could look into “Relax Your Mind & Body: Boost Your Energies” in order to muster the energy to do it all.

The only problem with taking these classes is there would be no time left for other classes I would really like to take. For instance, I dream of hitting the dance floor doing the mambo, west coast swing, and samba which is being taught at the Adult School. And, I have always wanted to learn to speak Italian which is also being offered. Then, for real novelty, there is a class to learn to play the bagpipes. (I am certain my friend cannot do that.)

There is even a class to help solve my dilemma over which classes to take. In “Discover Your Life Purpose”, I could learn my true destiny. According to the course description, each of us is born for a unique life path leading to the full expression of our creative potential and ultimate fulfillment in life. So, by taking the class, I could learn whether I am meant to bake or to blow bagpipes.

Without benefit of the class, I’ll have to figure it out myself. What I figure is I should just be myself and do exactly what I want, instead of trying to keep up with my friend. My friend would agree, because she always wants whatever is best for me. She is that type of friend, too.
